Hi,

I am currently studying towards a Masters of Science in Computer Forensics at the University of Westminster. As part of my course I need to complete a project in the area of computer forensics.

The project is aimed to challenge us to research, plan, carry out and critically evaluate an independent piece of work. This project can be based purely on an area of complex research. Or, alternatively, the project can include a practical aspect of computer forensics (for example programming a new computer forensic tool).

I wondering if anyne had any relevant project ideas for the current computer forensic industry. I am interested in both research and practical projects. However, I have no previous programming experience and so would not be able to do any projects involving this skill.

I would be extremely grateful for any ideas as it will allow me to have a full understanding of what areas of computer forensics need further investigation and therefore I can hopefully prepare a worthwhile project.

Thanks,
Louise

Hi Louise,

It is rather difficult to give you suggestions as we don't know what you have learnt so far. I haven't done a project yet and am sort of glad because I can't programme either. Without programming a forensic tool I'm not sure what else you can do apart from something web-based but I've no idea how it would work.

As for suggestions you could maybe do something to do with social networking websites but I'm not sure what information is relevant to forensics apart from cookies but there are loads of cookie readers already. Can the teaching staff not help you? You could even write to local forensic companies and see if they have any suggestions.

Sorry I can't be much more of a help, as I'll be in the same boat as you if I ever need to do a project.

PS. You've posted this in the wrong section.

Cheers for that.

The teaching staff aren't really being much help yet. We haven't properly started talking about it though, but I thought it would be best to see what people in the industry thought. I appreciate your thoughts.

Oh and where would it be best to post this message? I've never used a forum before!

There doesn't seem to be a place suitable for your thread. Not that I particularly mind as its not my forum;)
