I have been working closely with a couple of universities for a while now and have had quite a bit of input into what they teach.
Working with Birmingham City University, it has been implimented that their computer forensics course will include both training AND certification on Encase, FTK, .XRY as well as the grounding for all other forensic aspects of the job and law.
If you out there could choose which course you could do, how many would switch to go for the computer forensics course highlighted above?
I would be interested to know!

Simon

Officially, it doesnt exhist until its approved on Thursday 29th April. It should be launched a few days after that.
What do you think of it so far then?
Sounds great to me as an employer.

If I hadn't already studied computer forensics at University then it would interest me. Getting certificates wouldn't be the deciding factor in me choosing the course though as there are other factors involved but I would have it as an option. So would Guidance Software actually come in and 'teach' or is it just a case of the Uni arranging to attend a training course?. If the latter then something that would also help attract/interest potential students in my opinion is including the cost of the training courses in the tuition fees that students pay to study on the course. Would make the price more worthwhile as I certainly didn't get my moneys worth when studying computer forensics at Uni.

qwerty,
I am not 100% sure on how they are going to do this, however, I believe that they will be having instruction on site.
To me, as an employer, this is what I need, experience in forensic tools used in the real world.

I assume it's at their Technology Innovation Centre; Have you had talks with someone called Parmjit Chima? I think he organises courses, not sure if he has anything to do with the degrees, but I know he deals with the external courses.
I think it's a great idea.... I studied for my degree there, and they basically taught Cisco's CCNA curriculum for one or two modules a year. It was a shame the exams and certification weren't included.
However, I do also have some reservations, which qwerty hit; if it's internally taught, then chances are it will be from someone without experience in the field (mainly because it's a very young field - They do have some top notch Cisco guys teaching). A simple braindump from EnCe trainers or similar wouldn't be good for students.
Would I sign up? Nope...
I have done my degree, so wouldn't do another. Possibly an MSc, but whether or not I will, I do not know... I have finally secured a role in CF and i'm happy that I do not HAVE to do a masters in it.

Minesh,
Indeed Parmjit is the guy heading this process with Shahood. They are looking at taking industry trainers, (I have put them in touch with an Encase Certified Trainer who teaches upto Advanced level), to teach the students - specifically for the reasons that yourself and Qwerty stated, (I agree that there is nothing worse than a lecturer with no real world experience).
What I have tried to get them to do is to go down the route of learning academically WITH real world training, so that when the course is finished, the student 'should' be able to walk straight into a job without any major problems, (at least 'should' have a major advantage over all the other University courses).
I know which student I would pick....:)
