Hi There,

I'm currently thinking of studying Computer forensics after now being interested in the subject for a couple of years.

I have worked in IT for 10 years in various Windows and project support roles with a small amount of security work (PGP Products), I have been thinking about the MSc - Master of Science in Computer Security and Forensics from 7safe in association with The University of Bedfordshire so that hopefully I can continue working whilst studying.

Does anyone have any advice? if i managed to obtain a degree would I need to start at the bottom in a forensic position?

I have some self taught encase experience, would it also be worth me doing a course and exam?

Thanks in advance

hi buzzy,

What target is it that You want to achieve by taking the (any particular) course? Would an MSc give you the credentials to obtain the job you are looking for? What do the job adverts ask for these days?

It may suit you better to use accredited software suite training and Quals ie encase / accessdata, to supplement your experience to date, and maybe to make a reasonably swift job change. Once in, You could gain valuable experience by just being part of an established company.

Self taught, meritorious that it is, doesn't carry the same credibility as say Encase Certified Examiner when standing up in court.

I agree with Kern... Join an established company, start from the bottom and work your way up.... your wage will rise fairly quickly.

There's a large number of companies now who offer a training package, so i'd take it (in fact, I did and don't regret it for a second, despite the pay cut to begin with!)

Can't help you with regards to the degree/masters though, sorry... it was an option I was considering before too... From what I have read/heard about university courses, they leave a lot to be desired.

Kind Regards,
