Phreaking

Phreaking can mean stealing the identity of a phone, and therefore obtaining free telephone calls at someone else’s expense, or alternatively hacking into the phone system. This can be either the mobile phone provider, or the fixed line provider. The reason for doing this is to obtain free telephone calls, anywhere in the world.

It is thought that Phreaking was started in the 1950’s when AT&T introduced a fully automatic direct dial long distance system which used ‘in-band signalling’. The early Phreakers gained an understanding of how these systems worked, and used a backdoor system in which they found that a specific tone of 2600Hz, would allow very basic controls of these systems. With some experimentation, they managed to work out how to gain control of phone lines and therefore non-chargeable telephone calls.
